Sedation Options for Fort Liberty Soldiers and Families

Nitrous Oxide ("Laughing Gas")

Nitrous oxide is the lightest sedation we offer. You breathe a colorless gas through a small nose mask, the calming effect kicks in within minutes, and it wears off within minutes of removing the mask. You stay alert the entire time and you can drive back through Yadkin Gate yourself afterward.

Best for: routine cleanings if you have mild anxiety, fillings, simple extractions, and patients who want the edge taken off without a long recovery.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral sedation is a prescription pill taken about an hour before the appointment. You stay conscious and responsive, but you feel deeply relaxed and most patients remember little of the procedure afterward. You will need a ride home.

Best for: longer procedures, patients with moderate to severe anxiety, and soldiers or family members who have tried nitrous and need something deeper.

IV Sedation ("Twilight Sleep")

IV sedation is delivered through a small IV line with continuous monitoring of your vitals. You enter twilight sleep – not unconscious, but deeply relaxed, with almost no memory of the procedure afterward. The sedation level can be adjusted in real time, which is why IV is the right call for complex appointments.

Best for: full mouth implant cases, multiple extractions in one visit, oral surgery, severe gag reflex, and anyone who wants several procedures consolidated into one appointment instead of spread across multiple PT and family schedule disruptions.

General Anesthesia

For the most complex cases or for patients whose anxiety is severe enough that lighter sedation will not work, we coordinate with a board-certified anesthesiologist to administer general anesthesia in our office. You are fully unconscious during the procedure.

Best for: full-arch All-on-4 cases, multiple complex extractions and grafts in a single appointment, and patients whose anxiety has prevented dental care for years.

Sedation for Soldiers Carrying TBI, Blast Injuries, or PTSD

Dental anxiety in the general population is usually about the procedure. For soldiers with TBI, blast exposure, or PTSD, the anxiety can be layered: the procedure, plus the sensory environment, plus the loss of control while reclined in a chair with a stranger working near the airway. Standard reassurance does not always reach it.

Sedation – particularly oral and IV – directly addresses that layered response. You are not asked to white-knuckle through the procedure. The sedation handles the body's alarm response, and the local anesthetic handles the pain. We also adjust the office environment when we know a patient needs it: quieter rooms, fewer staff in and out, advance notice before any noise or contact.

What to Expect on Your Sedation Appointment

Pre-appointment consultation. We review medical history, current medications, anxiety history, and any service-related considerations. The sedation level recommendation comes out of that conversation.
Pre-appointment instructions. Most sedation requires fasting and a ride. Written instructions go out at booking.
The appointment. We monitor vitals throughout, administer sedation, and perform the procedure.
For nitrous, you are clear within minutes and can drive yourself back through the gate. For oral, IV, and general anesthesia, a responsible adult drives you home.
Follow-up call. We check in the next day and schedule any follow-up appointments.

Sedation Cost, Insurance, and Financing

Sedation costs depend on the level. Nitrous is the least expensive and is often bundled with the procedure cost. IV sedation and general anesthesia are billed separately because they require more provider time, equipment, and monitoring.

We accept select PPO dental insurance plans (in-network). We do not accept Medicaid. For patients without dental insurance, we offer a membership discount plan and partner with CareCredit for monthly payment plans on larger cases. Getting Here From Fort Liberty

From the Fort Liberty Yadkin Road Gate, the practice is less than a mile south on Yadkin Road – the same road, just continue out the gate. Total drive time is typically under 5 minutes outside of peak gate traffic. From other gates (All American, Honeycutt, R. Is sedation dentistry safe?

Yes, when administered by trained providers with proper monitoring. We monitor blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen saturation throughout every sedation appointment. For IV sedation and general anesthesia, we follow ADA guidelines on equipment, staffing, and emergency protocols.

Does sedation work for soldiers with PTSD or TBI?

Yes. Sedation – particularly oral and IV – is one of the most effective tools we have for patients whose anxiety is rooted in something deeper than fear of the procedure. We adjust the appointment environment alongside the sedation level when a patient has service-related sensitivities.

Can I drive back through the gate after sedation?

Only after nitrous oxide. Oral sedation, IV sedation, and general anesthesia all require a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for several hours afterward.

How long do the effects last?

Nitrous wears off within minutes. Oral sedation effects can last 4 to 6 hours. IV sedation typically wears off within an hour at the office, though you may feel drowsy the rest of the day. General anesthesia recovery is the longest – plan the rest of the day off and avoid returning to duty that day.
