What Are the Differences Between Oral and IV Sedation?

Key Differences Between Oral and IV Sedation

Fayetteville, NC sedation dentist Dr. Jeremiah Davis explains that there are two common types of dental sedation: oral sedation and IV sedation.

Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed pill, sometimes the night before and/or the day of the procedure. After taking the medication, the patient must wait for the body to metabolize the drug before feeling its effects.

IV sedation, on the other hand, involves placing an IV in the patient’s arm or hand. Medication is then delivered directly into the bloodstream by the provider.

According to Dr. Davis, the biggest difference between the two methods is control and timing.

With IV sedation, the effects are almost immediate. The provider can administer medication instantly and adjust the level of sedation in real time as needed.

With oral sedation, the body must first process the medication, which means it can take longer to work. The response depends on how the body metabolizes the drug, making the timing less immediate compared to IV sedation.

While both methods can be effective, IV sedation allows for more immediate response and greater control during the procedure.
